Environmental management analises which aspects of companies’ operations have the greatest impact on the environment and looks for ways to control them safely and efficiently, e.g. with preventive measures in procurement and selection of suppliers as well as with technical solutions i.e. pollution control. The attention of directors is thus directed to the most important environmental issues.
All environmental management projects are then defined in a project plan and measurable goals set up for particular issues. Environmental management also handles the increased demands of customers, interested parties and the government in a well-defined way, with the purpose of ensuring that they are met. Two important aspects of environmental management are risk analyses and policy development regarding environmental issues. Various companies and associations are aware of the benefit of preparing such a policy without going as far as setting up a certified environmental management system.
Although environmental management does not have a long history in Iceland, experts at VSO Consulting have extensive experience in that field. They have, among other things, worked on the structuring of EMAS and ISO 14000 environmental management systems. One of VSO Consulting’s engineers participated in setting up an environmental management system for ISAL, which is one of two certified companies here in Iceland. VSO Consulting is now setting up an environmental management system based on the ISO 14001 standard for the publishing company of the daily newspaper Morgunbladid.
